Abstract

Chemistry of the interstitial waters in the splash zone of Lake Baikal was studied during June-July, 2011 and 2012. As a result, factors affecting concentration of ions, biogenic elements and organic matter in the interstitial waters of the lake beaches and nearshore waters with different intensity of recreational load have been determined. Higher concentrations of main ions and silicon were found in the discharge areas of the splash zone ammonium nitrogen – in lake shallows and bays mineral phosphorus – in the regions under high anthropogenic stress. Concentations of all biogenic elements appeared to be higher on the beaches with detritus accumulations. It was also reported that the interstitial water of the splash zone imposes a negligeable effect on the chemical composition of the nearshore waters.
