First data on quantitative dynamics of ciliates from different biotopes of the splash zone of Bolshye Koty Bay (Southern Baikal)

Abstract

Quantitative characteristics (total abundance) of ciliates from different habitats on the splash zone of Bolshye Koty Bay (Southern Baikal) are presented. Samples were collected along four standard transects from June to November 2010–2012. The ciliate abundance of interstitial waters within the splash zone is shown to depend on the presence of detrital material accumulated on the shore and the composition of sediments and exceeds their abundance in littoral zone (100 m away from the shore) by an order of magnitude. The ciliate abundance within the shore accumulations of Tetraspora exceeded their quantity within the such accumulations of Ulothrix by one order of magnitude and within Draparnaldioides shore accumulations by two orders of magnitude. Seasonal and interannual dynamics of planctonic ciliates in littoral zone were typical for years with low warming of water in summer.
