Abstract

Clearly marked seasonal changes of skin thickness and hair coverage density in Altay maral introduced in Ile Alatau are described. Epidermis from different parts of the body is much thicker in winter than in summer, whereas the papillary and reticular layers of winter are thinner. The total thickness of the skin is thicker in winter than in summer. Horny layer formed numerous loosely arranged horny scales, contains small air pockets that increase thermal insulation properties of the skin. The sebaceous glands, usually in the summer increase in size. All the observed changes are explained by adaptation to seasonality and habitat conditions in Ile Alatau.
