Abstract

In 2006–2010, mapping counts of Carrion Crow nests were carried out at sample plots in Irkutsk. Average breeding density was estimated at 5.64 pair/km2, and in the city center it was 6,89–8,91 pair/km2. The number of breeding crows in the main types of urban habitats in Irkutsk was estimated at 417 pairs, and their number for all territory of Irkutsk (115 km2) did at c. 470–530 pairs. A distribution of breeding territories in the city center is uniform, which can suggest an idea on a packing of this city area by crows in the recent situation. Choosing the nesting tree, crows significantly prefer Siberian Spruce Picea obovata due to good nest protecting by its crown. In favorable condition, a nesting territory can be occupied with crows in many years, perhaps by the same crow pair or its posterity.
