Abstract

Analysis of 64 Baikalospongia intermedia samples collected in Lake Baikal at the depths from 100 to 1450 m has been carried out. It was found that the currently existing morphological description of the typical and deep-water forms of species do not allow separating them. Some sponges have conflicting characteristics. These sponges were distributed in the entire range of depths investigated. At the same time, sponges with all characteristics of the typical form of species were scarce deeper than 500 m. And the sponges with all deep-water subspecies characteristics were not found at the depths less than 500 m. Sophisticated study of littoral and deep-water B. intermedia morphology is necessary in order to identify new subspecies criteria and to resolve the existing contradictions.
