Abstract

The problem of taxonomic position of a carinate Anisus (Gyraulus) species (family Planorbidae) inhabiting the shallow water zone of Lake Baikal is discussed. From 1909 till 2012 as many as seven different names were proposed to designate this species. It is revealed that the proper one is Anisus (Gyraulus) stroemi (Westerlund, 1881). We confirm this by comparison of the Baikalian individuals with those from the type series of A. stroemi as well as with specimens from the Urals and Western Siberia. Two other species, A. centrifugus (Westerlund, 1897) and A. kamtschaticus (Westerlund, 1897), previously mentioned from the shallow water zone of Lake Baikal, most probably, do not inhabit this region.
