Soil Reclamation in the Kuda Depression (East Siberia)

Abstract
Kuda depression is located in the southeastern part of the Central Siberian plateau in the Pribaikalskaya depression within gently sloping hilly relief. The Kuda river is a right tributary of the Angara river. The Kuda depression is one of the main agricultural areas of the Irkutsk region. The agro-climatic conditions here are favourable for farming, namely cultivation of crops and vegetables resulting in ploughing of whole terraces’ areas. This area is one of the populous areas in the Irkutsk region, which location close to the city determines the intensive development of agricultural activities. The result of our research is suggestion of ecological and reclamation zonation, which includes units of different levels and sublevels. Three main groups include: (i) the soils classified as Chernozems from the forth above floodplain terrace that do not require the irrigation or other reclamation approaches; (ii) soils of the terraces that should be irrigated for agricultural land using; and (iii) soils from the first and second above floodplain terraces should be irrigated or drained and/ or desalinized. The map of ecological and reclamation zones that reflects the reclamation conditions recommendations is suggested.
